William
H. Sardo, Jr. Pallet and
Container Research Laboratory
Virginia Tech's William H.
Sardo Jr. Pallet and Container Research Laboratory is the only research facility
in the United States that performs comprehensive research and development work,
provides technical assistance, and offers educational programs focusing exclusively
on pallets and containers, as well as the materials and fasteners with which
the pallets and containers are assembled.
The goal of the laboratory is to provide leadership in conducting
research, technical assistance, and continuing education programs directly
applicable to the pallet and container industries and their clients.
About the Facility
The laboratory covers
some 7,600 square feet that provide space for standardized and special testing
equipment and environmental exposure and conditioning chambers; faculty, staff,
and student offices; and library and computing facilities.
The pallet and container
testing equipment includes standard as well as uniquely computerized, mechanical,
and hydraulic instrumentation. Access exists to adjoining fully-equipped wood
and metal shops, chemistry laboratories, and wood composite pilot plants.
A portable sawmill and dry kiln are also located on site.
A number of University
faculty members, research associates, and graduate students are directly involved
in the laboratory's activities. In addition, engineering expertise is available
from the faculty and staff of adjacent laboratories and through interdepartmental
cooperation.
