Testing and Applied Research

The center offers a broad range of testing capabilities that include component lumber testing, pallet testing, package testing, and unitized load testing. Standard and special tests are performed, including those specified by ASTM, ANSI, ISO, and ISTA, as well as those specified by government agencies.

Requests for Technical Assistance

Center staff respond to questions and requests for information within their specialized areas of expertise, which includes computer-assisted designing, writing product and performance specifications, and introducing testing standards. Materials scientists at the center are an excellent resource for information concerning the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of wood and other materials used for fabrication of pallets and containers.

Product Development and Evaluation

The center assists clients in developing new, more efficient pallet, packaging, and equipment designs. Using techniques developed at the center, the implications of a design change in any component of a system on the material handling costs can be assessed. This systems-based approach can then be used to optimize material handling efficiency.

Research

The research focus includes understanding how packaging, pallets, and distribution equipment interact. The results will be methods for optimizing unit load storage and distribution system design.

Publications

The center maintains an extensive research data base that includes information vital to researchers developing reliability-based models for the design of pallets, containers, and other related structures.

Continuing Education

Educational programs directed toward the training of employees of the targeted industries are offered. Short course are designed to provide one-half to several days of instruction. Courses focusing on pallet, container, and unit load design are offered annually. Special programs can be developed to fill particular relevant educational needs.
